Progress towards MDGs will now be monitored as part of national development strategies

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has integrated the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) into the National Development Strategies for Growth and the Reduction of Poverty and their monitoring systems. These include a comprehensive set of indicators on cross-cutting issues including gender, the environment, and HIV/AIDS. The strategy development process involved a wide range of stakeholders at various levels, including, besides the Government, civil society organizations, the private sector, academic institutions, development partners, and the communities. The monitoring systems build on this inclusive process and bring the stakeholders together in a nationally led and government-coordinated system for monitoring progress towards national objectives.

The political commitment of the United Republic of Tanzania, and the resulting policies and allocation of increased resources, have resulted in steady progress in achieving the Goals related to primary education, promoting gender equity and empowering women, and improving environmental sustainability through access to water and sanitation. There has also been a significant reduction in child mortality, and modest declines in the proportion of people living below the basic needs and poverty lines, although the absolute number may have increased due to population growth. There is a possibility of achieving Goal 1 (poverty reduction), based on an impressive growth in gross domestic product, coupled with economic, governance, and institutional reforms and the transformation of the rural economy.

The country faces a challenge in relation to generating regular and reliable data because of weak sector information systems and resource constraints. The revised monitoring system is intended to address this challenge through planned surveys, and stronger links to sector- and local-level monitoring and evaluation systems.

One of the new features of the national process of monitoring achievement of the MDGs is the production of a regular Poverty and Human Development Report that will provide a comprehensive overview of progress in relation to human development indicators and an in-depth exploration of a particular aspect of human development as a guide to policymaking.

NOTE: The MDG data presented here is the latest available from the United Nations Statistics Division. The World Bank has recently released new poverty estimates, which reflect improvements in internationally comparable price data. The new data estimates set a new poverty line of US$1.25 a day and offer a much more accurate picture of the cost of living in developing countries. They are based on the results of the 2005 International Comparison Program (ICP), released in first half of 2008. Country-specific poverty estimates will be released by the World Bank in late 2008
