MDG Profile:
Poverty: the central target of the government
Slovenia is well able to achieve most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Its MDG agenda accords with the broader European Union policies in the areas covered by the MDGs. This is especially true of social inclusion and the environmental policies. Now a European Union member State, Slovenia has committed itself to providing development assistance to poor countries. In this way, the Government is working towards achieving Goal 8, which calls for a global partnership for development.
The baseline MDG Report for Slovenia, published in 2003, details the different aspects of poverty in the country and tries to align tools for monitoring poverty with the relevant European Union policies and strategies. Slovenia has met most of the targets for the first seven MDGs. To enable further progress, the national team has designed targets for the Goals 1-7 that are adapted to the country situation and address the problems facing both selected vulnerable groups of population and geographical areas. The relevant European Union policy monitoring frameworks incorporated the agreed targets and indicators.
To meet its obligations as a donor country, the government has been working with all the national stakeholders involved to put in place the national framework for delivery of its Official Development Assistance (ODA). With the present ODA level estimated at 0.15 per cent of gross national income, the Government has committed to meet the European Union targets – 0.17 per cent in 2010 and 0.33 per cent in 2015.

NOTE: The MDG data presented here is the latest available from the United Nations Statistics Division. The World Bank has recently released new poverty estimates, which reflect improvements in internationally comparable price data. The new data estimates set a new poverty line of US$1.25 a day and offer a much more accurate picture of the cost of living in developing countries. They are based on the results of the 2005 International Comparison Program (ICP), released in first half of 2008. Country-specific poverty estimates will be released by the World Bank in late 2008
